The Zombie-Wilson Diaries Overviews

It should have been the perfect vacation. A beautiful island without a soul in sight. Blue sea so clear I can see the reef. Palm trees swaying in the wind, and a girl with barely a scrap of clothing on. There is only one problem. She is a zombie and she wants to eat me. That's right. My only companion is a creature with a hunger for human flesh. I should bash in her brains and toss her in the ocean but I don't have a volleyball to talk to. All I have is this diary and my own Zombie-Wilson.

And thus we set the tone for this intimate look at a man and his undead island-mate.

The Zombie Wilson Diaries plays on the castaway scenario replacing the volleyball named Wilson from the Tom Hanks film with a zombie girl who is quite a bit more animated and a whole lot more bitey than a ball with a bloody hand print for a face. Our nameless narrator begins his diary while on a business trip to the islands, which turns into a plane crash which lands him on a deserted island in the middle of the ocean with one of the other passengers, who apparently floated up to the island alive, just like him, but made the unfortunate decision to eat some exotic berries that have turned her from a hottie model type into a rottie gooey type. But fear not, our narrator decides to take her under his wing instead of bashing her skull in with a big rock because she keeps him company on a island lacking in others to socially interact with. Oh, we do get the occasional interloper, like our fair lady's dead rotting hubby and a few natives who have canoed over from another island, but for the most part, this tale of a fateful trip is all about a man and his zombie.

A nice touch with this book is the appearance of handwritten text and the hand scrawled stick drawings that the narrator puts at the front of each chapter, which added to the personal diary feel of this story.

It is an intriguing relationship that this deluded and desperate man has with a creature that I found hard to define as far as what her role was. Each chapter starts with "My girlfriend..." but it becomes clear that the zombie in this story plays multiple parts, and girlfriend, it seems, is probably the least of them. Desperate for companionship, it is almost as if she is his pet or willful child, as he takes care of her and keeps her from getting into trouble, while at the same time she snaps at him and generally acts like a brat, but there are moments when it seems that his girl, undead Friday, seems to recognize and even relies on him, especially when there are thunderstorms and undead sharks trying to snap her in half.

The comedy here is dark and should be appreciated by a fan of the zombie genre for certain, as well as those who like a bit of a twisted tale in general. The self-induced torture that this castaway goes through as he debates, on a daily basis, whether it would just be better to kill this creature even though she provides him with a shred of human contact, is a wickedly humorous conflict. I'm not really sure whether I liked this guy or I just wanted to smack some sense into him, but I know one thing for sure, this book was an entertaining journey into the surreal.

"A truly elegant taste is generally accompanied by excellence of heart." ~ Henry Fielding

Looking at life from a different perspective is always sure to bring on new challenges and surprises. So what if you've been ignoring this side of yourself for the last 20 years? There is always time to reorganize your day so you can sip tea in bed in the morning instead of rushing about feeling frazzled. This book shows you how to enhance your life instead of letting life lead you wherever it may. Want to take time for long baths? Organize them into your life. As the author notes:

"Living elegantly must be achieved through experience."

It seems a worthy goal, but where to start? The chapters include:

What is Elegance?
Wardrobe Rules
Accessorize!
All that Glitters
Bare Elegance
Scentsations
Organizing Principles
Home, Elegant Home
Elegant Entertaining
Shabby Chic
The Write Stuff
Beauty from the Inside Out
Elegant Findings

Within these intriguing little chapters you can find out about the top ten items every woman should have in her closet. The section on lingerie is fun and statistics and secrets throughout add fun to various topics. How should you take care of pearls? Should you use hairspray and perfume "before" or "after" you put on pearls. These are of course things a girl must know, because at any point in time the man of your dreams may buy you some. Who would want to be clueless and ruin them?

Spa Girl types will love the "Bare Elegance" chapter, although you probably will know most of this by the time you are 25. This section serves as a refresher course in caring for yourself, no matter what. "Scentsations" is an introduction to perfumes and then it leads into a discussion about candles, room sprays, incense, scented papers and essential oils.

I can think of about four people right this very minute who would love to read the "Purging your Purse" chapter. Just yesterday I had to sort through my purse to find my keys. Now the "If Your Walls Could Talk" section says your home reveals your self-portrait. Feng Shui is briefly introduced, but the focus is more on clearing out the clutter room by room. After your home is all organized, you may want to throw a party. An especially brief section could be explored in more detail.

Ideas about how to live a more elegant life becomes even more practical when you read through the 30 days of elegant ideas.

Day 4: Write a note instead of sending an e-mail.
Day 11: Read a Poem
Day 21: Buy someone else a gift, for no reason

The last chapter on saying goodbye has a lot of wisdom, although at times I think that people who keep saying they are really busy or tired should just be more honest and say what they really mean. It would save us all a lot of annoyance and confusion. This book says to end a friendship, allow it to run its course. That might be a good idea if you have the time to put up with someone's abuse. If not, I say moving to say New Zealand might be a good option.

The Little Pink Books are a fun way to spend an hour and the Little Black Books look ever more fun. A fun series of books to keep you entertained and they don't take up much room in your purse. You may even want to keep one in your coat pocket so you always have something fun to read.

Writer's Digest Grammar Desk Reference CustomerReview

The Grammar Desk Reference is not really a book that was put together to be read from cover to cover, but if you are a writer working on an essay or novel and want to quickly find out if you need a comma in a sentence or not. Then this book will help.

The Grammar Desk Reference is just what it says. It was written explicitly to be used during the proofreading process. It's not a grammar book that could be read from cover to cover, but once you find information on your comma you may be tempted to keep reading for a bit to get full information on how it should be used. The information is way easier to find in it then in a normal grammar guide though if you need reading glasses to read you will definitely want to wait till writers digest puts out a large print edition.

I gave it four stars because it is wordy and the print in it is small (think 9-10 Point Arial type) and could really be a lot larger it also skims a little on explaining the Grammar in lay terms which I found a bit disappointing. But in most cases you can quickly locate what an "Adverbial Introductory Element" or an "Dangling Modifier" is with very little looking and get an idea of what the authors mean. If you have one grammar book that is hard to use because you can't find anything in it (which is why I bought mine) then this may be for you. My only gripes are the print size and that while the spiral binding may make it possible to lay the book flat while you look at your manuscript, it also makes the pages irritatingly hard to turn at times. But other then these things the book is okay as a quick and easy to use reference. If you want something simple to read cover to cover (or that resembled your college grammar guide) then this is not for you.

You Must Remember This Overviews

Joyce Carol Oates's epic novel of an American family in the 1950's probes the tender division between the permissible and the forbidden, between ordinary life and the secret places of the heart. Set in an industrial, working-class town in upstate New York, this book chronicles the frustrating marriage of parents Lyle and Hannah; the idealistic political journey of son Warren, and the passionate, obsessive relationship that develops between 15-year-old Enid Maria and her uncle Felix, a professional boxer twice her age. While brilliantly re-creating a decade that worshipped conformity, You Must Remember This presents the lives of family members that break every convention in the search for meaning and fulfillment.

You Must Remember This CustomerReview

This novel from 1987 by Oates hits many of Oates's strengths with a touch of Lolita or incest, but without the mental obsessions of Nabokov's famous novel. All in all, it is one of Oates's most interesting novels and I recommend the book.

Joyce Carol Oates was born in 1938 in upstate New York State and is a distinguished Professor of Humanities at Princeton. She gained fame with her first novel With Shuddering Fall in 1964. Now four decades later, she is the author of scores of novels, many short stories, essays, plays, and poetry. The present novel from 1987 is somewhere near the middle of the chronological order of her body of work and we see the polished prose of an experienced writer.

I have read a number of her works from different time periods in her career and set up a Guide to Joyce Carol Oates Listmania list. Compared to her early novels, this is a straightforward and almost a "light" read. It contains some drama but there are a few intense scenes, but less than in some other works. The novel has a good story structure and easy prose, and the reader is spared the "too much prose" found in some early works such as The Assassins. The read is mostly compelling.

Oates is known for her emotional and dramatic stories, often with women or even poor women such as students or teachers caught up in stressful situations, and often set in her native upstate New York (Niagara River - Syracuse - Erie,PA. triangle). Actually, some of her best work is found in her 10 to 20 page short stories, which are often dramatic, sometimes very intense, and many involve off-beat characters, and they include rapes, murders, and people with serious mental health issues, etc. People who have not read her collections of short stories should take a look at those. The present novel contains many of those off-beat elements. It is a story set in a town in upstate New York. The story is about a middle class family and their uncle, a retired fighter, who is about 20 years younger than the father. The father runs a used furniture store. The story is set in the post WII years and the fifties, and contains some political and social elements from that era including the development of nuclear weapons, peace protests, bomb shelters, the McCarthy hearings, citizens being arrested for being suspected communists, Cadillac cars with big fins, etc.

The story is mostly about the youngest daughter, Enid Stevick, who is a young teenage student and their flamboyant uncle aged 30 or so, Felix. As mentioned, he is their father Lyle's step brother. They live in the industrial port town of Orinskay, New York, a town similar to other American industrial towns on the Great Lakes.

This is a relatively compelling read, but lacks the intensity of some of Oates's short stories. As a work by Oates it is a well balanced and interesting work. It is about the characters and how they change as they age, and particularly but not exclusively the interaction of Uncle Felix and Enid. This is one of her better novels, on par with We Were The Mulvaneys, a more recent novel.

There is no doubt that the pearls were a staple food to over the centuries. Pearl jewelry is the oldest ever recorded almost 3000 years.
